The passengers on Danish regional rail network Lollandsbanen can from today free of charge enjoy high speed internet as well as TV via the Denmark’s first genuine high speed internet connection, delivering up to 16 mb/s even at velocities surpassing 100 Km/h.

From today on, the passengers travelling Lollandsbanen can enjoy high speed internet access. In other words, the passengers can surf the Internet, watch TV and even use their mobile phones via a Skype client. All free of charge, while in the train! The high speed connection furthermore guarantees better service of the passengers because the train via GPS constantly transmits its position on to connecting busses. Later this year, the solution will even come to include CCTV in the trains.

“With Lollandsbanen it is the first time anyone has succeeded in creating a genuine high speed wireless connection in a train travelling at high speed. The partner in the project, Gratis Danmark (NoPayNet) is financing this service to operators around the world with their unique business model. When connecting to the Internet, the passengers are presented to a variety of discrete locally modified information and offers. While surfing they are shown a small band on their pc-screens highlighting local news.

The wireless technology used in the system on Lollandsbanen is named Flash-OFDM. This technology is ideal for transmitting data at very high speed because it ensures that data transmissions are executed with a very low delay rate. Hence, the client won’t experience time lag at high speed data transmissions which is often experienced using for example 3G.
